The Gapyear is exactly the same as the fulltime(6 Month) courses. As a gap year foreign student, you will do extra field trips during the course. See below.
The Stellenbosch Institute of Photography and Multimedia Studies (SIPS) were founded in 1996, twenty three years in existance, making it one of the oldest private photography schools in the Western Cape. During your studies you will also be able to enjoy stunning scenery, beaches, art galleries, historical sites, a vibrant nightlife, wine estates, hiking trails and a range of exciting outdoor activities. There are many fun additional practical workshops to choose from including scuba diving, 4×4 driving skills, kite surfing, first aid and even English, French or Japanese studies. If you’re into volunteering work you can participate in shark research, penguin rescue, helping AIDS children in townships and scientific surveys on pollution.
You’ll learn from the best as the lecturers are experienced industry professionals. Charl Best, principal and founder of SIPS, has 30 years of experience in various forms of photography. His work has been displayed in over 15 solo exhibitions, locally and internationally, and he’s been a producer for several short movies.
a Maximum of 8 students will be admitted to the Gapyear course and incorporated with the full-time students (six months).
Students obtain experience in various careers.
The course is presented in English.
Course fee: Same as Sips. Fulltime but add R 18000 for foreign students plus materials for extra field trips.

The Fulltime course will be 6 months:
You will study Photography, Video production and Photo and Tv. Make-up in the six month course. Commencing either February or July.
From 11 February to 13 June or 22 July – 14 November 2019/20
Full-time you will study Photography, Video production and Photo and Tv. Make-up in the semester.
You will complete theory and practical assignments in the basics of these subjects. You will learn more advanced specialized techniques that will prove the student a truly professional photographer. The student will attend weekly workshops in Landscape,- Fashion,-Theatre,– Documentary,- Advertising,- Food,-Industrial,- Wedding,-Wine and Packshot,- Commercial,- and Street photography.
Practical Projects each week:
You will also have to complete a thesis of every workshop attended and most workshops will have a theoretical lecture.
Your portfolio will consist of the above workshops and you will also work in a one hour lab for one week to gain practical experience of lab management.
Practical assignments group stock shoots for the rest of the week. Photo studio management and Portfolios.
At the end of the six months you will be able to do commercial photography, video’s and also the make-up of your models and clients. The student will be capable to enter the workforce after completion of the six month course.
Also, if you want to do the second semester too, then we will accommodate you as an intern, and let you gain practical experience and also do some advanced subjects.

Charl Best, the founder and principal of SIPS., for the past 23 years will be your course leader. He has done 15 international photo exhibitions and still practice professional photography. His photos are published in newspapers and international magazines. Charl did scientific photography for WNNR.,worked for Media24 and Perskor as a photographer and studied art at US. He did documentary films, hundreds of weddings and business product video’s.
This course is practical and give more meaning to the saying “There’s never a dull moment”. The student gets the opportunity to experience hands – on corporate education in Photography and Multimedia. SIPS will expose you in all the different types of Photography, Commercial, Advertising, Scientific, Sport to name a few and many more.
At the end of your course you will have a high standard of Professional and a Portfolio in all the specialized subjects that is acceptable all over the world.
We spend 70% on practical and 30% theory. The theory is a breeze even for a student with concentration problems! Lots of group photo shoots outdoors and in the studio. Detailed planning, styling and make-up done by all the students in the class. Great fun and friends forever.
